Q: I want to calculate cmc (Critical Micelle Concentration) of experimental data of conductivity of surfactant by Boltzmann type sigmoid equation. Could you please help me?

A: You can use Nonlinear Curve Fitting to calculate the parameter in the Boltzmann sigmoid equation
1. High-light your data and select Analysis: Fitting: Nonlinear Curve Fit in the menu to open NLFit dialog.
2. Select Growth/ Sigmoidal in Category drop-down, and Select Boltzmann in Function drop-down of the Setting tab.
3. Do fitting, then you can get the upper and lower limits of the sigmoid and calculate cmc.

If you want to know more detail about use Nonlinear Curve Fitting, please refer to the below pages: Quick Start for Nonlinear Curve Fitting , The NLFit Dialog Box
And the Boltzmann function is described in the following page. Boltzmann function

Q: I wonder if it would be possible for OriginLab to develop tool to handle HDF4 file format. As it stands OriginLab can handle only the HDF5 format - but it is frequent to have to deal HFD4 file format.

A: I will suggest our developers to implement the HDF4 import support in the future Origin release, but I'm not sure of the urgent necessity of the format as described in the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchical_Data_Format ) -HDF4 is "the older version of the format" than its improved version, HDF5 that is currently supported by Origin. It has many limitations such as "lacks a clear object model, which makes continued support and improvement difficult." In short, it seems that HDF4 is becoming obsolete, and there are even utility programs around which convert HDF4 to HDF5 (e.g., http://www.hdfgroup.org/h4toh5/ ). So I suggest meanwhile that you try to find a way to convert yourHDF4 files to HDF5 outside Origin.

Q: I have a data sheet, containing one X, and 100 Y. for each Y, I want to fit 2 peaks in it. How can I simply fit 2 peaks for 1 Y, and totally 100 Y in one worksheet?

A: Use NLFit (the non-linear fit tool) to fit 2 replicas to one of your datasets, and save the workbook as an Analysis Template. After select a function Category and fitting Function. You can expand the Replica node and set Number of Replicas to 1 in Advanced page of Setting tab (plus 1 original peak = 2 peaks total).

Then use Batch Processing to do the same fitting operation on the other 99 datasets. We have some video tutorials that can help get you going with this. If you get stuck you can get back in touch with us. Video Tutorials-General Analysis

Q: I saw some menus before, but they suddenly disappeared at some point. How to get them back?

A: Please select Format: Menu: Full Menus in the menu to see whether it can solve the problem.

Q: I was working with Origin 7.5J. The function "Edit: exchange the X -columns and the Y-rows" disappeared in version 8.5J. How the columns and rows can be exchange in version 8.5?

A: I think the function that you want to use, is Worksheet: Transpose in Origin8.5. Please refer to these pages about transpose: Transposing the columns and rows , Transpose-Description

Q: I am working on IR spectra and I found the peaks by peak gadget. But I can not change the font of the shown peaks. Would please help me?

A: When you use Gadget: Quick Peak, the label font of the peaks can not be changed. But you can select Analysis: Peaks and Baseline: Peak Analyzer: Find peak to instead. Then the label font of the peaks can be changed.
If you want to know more about the Find peak in Peak Analyzer, please to these pages: Finding peaks with the peak analyzer , Peak Analyzer, Find Peaks Page

Q: What is the best plot theme that can compare between 4 curves and their corresponding peaks shown, and can I move the curves up and down so I can compare them together?

A: If you want to compare the peak of the curve, I suggest you plot a waterfall graph. Please highlight your data and select Plot: Multi-Curve: Waterfall in the menu.

But if you want to move the curves up and down to compare them, you can select Plot: Multi-Curve: Multiple Y Axes in the menu to plot the graphs. X axis for the different layers are linking with each other. Then double-click the y axis of the specified curve to open Y Axis dialog, and move the curve up and down by adjusting y axis scale.
If you are using the last version Origin8.6, you can click Rescale Tool button and move the curve up and down directly by mouse dragging.
