Silent Install
- To create a silent setup, you must be logged into the computer with a log in account that has administrative privileges.
- Users who run the silent setup must be logged into their computers with a log in account that has administrative privileges.
- Also, if you own the Origin Concurrent Network package, you must let users know the host name or IP address where your Origin FLEXnet service is running.
To use InstallShield's silent mode to install Origin on computers in your organization, perform the following steps.
- Copy the Origin Setup files (13 files) into a folder on computer "A".
- Share this folder with FULL READ/WRITE privileges and note its UNC share name. (e.g. \\A\Origin\)
- On a computer that does not have Origin installed, open the command window and run the Origin setup exe with the '-r' option to record your installation.
For example, if you had copied the Origin setup files to C:\Origin\ on computer "A", then run:
\\A\Origin\Setup.exe -r
This will record the Origin setup steps. When you run the setup, make sure you install into a drive that exists for all potential Origin users.
- Locate the setup.iss file created by the recording process in the %SystemDrive%\Windows folder (usually C:\Windows) on the computer. Move this file to the Origin Setup folder on A where setup.exe is located.
- There are two options to make this recording available to users:
- Create a Silent Shortcut to Setup.exe by adding the '-s' option:
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s
Email this shortcut to all users. (They must be on the network and they must be able to see \\A.) Ask these users to run the shortcut.
- alternatively -
- Ask the users to run:
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s
from the command window on their computer.
After setup.exe -s is run, a file named setup.log is created. If a problem is encountered with the silent installation, send this file along with the setup.iss file to OriginLab, at reginfo@originlab.com
- Please note that this silent installation method only installs Origin onto the target computers.
At the first Origin start-up, the following actions are performed.
- Selection of a User Files Folder
- License Management
-If a Concurrent Network package, the user must enter the FLEXnet server's host name or IP address in the licensing dialog box.
-If a node-locked Group package, the user must activate a license from the OriginLab website, using the License Activation dialog box. (They have seven days to activate the license.)
- Registration
For Concurrent Network packages, the user will see a Registration dialog box at the second Origin start-up.
Silent Uninstall
To use InstallShield's silent mode to uninstall Origin on computers in your organization, perform the following steps.
- Copy the Origin Setup files (13 files) into a folder on computer "A".
- Share this folder with FULL READ/WRITE privileges and note its UNC share name. (e.g. \\A\Origin)
Note: If using Windows XP, make sure to click the Permissions button on the Properties | Sharing tab to allow full read and write access.
- On computer "A", verify the Origin is already installed, since you are about to record the un-installation of Origin.
- Open the command window and run the Origin setup exe with the '-r' option to record your un-installation.
For example, if you had copied the Origin setup files to C:\Origin on computer "A", then run:
\\A\Origin\Setup.exe -r
When you run the setup, you will see the Modify | Repair/Upgrade | Remove dialog. Choose Remove, and click Next. Choose Finish at the end. You have now recorded the un-installation in a file called setup.iss
- Locate the setup.iss file created by the recording process in the Windows folder on computer "A".
- Move this file to the Origin Setup folder \\A\Origin\. NOTE: you may already have a setup.iss file there. This may be the recorded Installation. If so, store it for later use by renaming it to say SilentInstall.iss
- Then users can uninstall Origin silently by following one of the following methods:
-
Create a Silent Shortcut to Setup.exe by adding the '-s' option:
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s
.
Email this shortcut to all users. (They must be on the network and they must be able to see \\A.) Ask these users to run the shortcut.
- alternatively -
-
Ask the users to run:
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s
from the command window on their computers.
After setup.exe -s is run, a file named setup.log is created. If a problem is encountered with the silent un-installation, send this file along with the setup.iss file to OriginLab, at reginfo@originlab.com
Silent Install and Uninstall Together
Presumably, if you are silently uninstalling, you have already silently installed. If you would like to keep both recorded iss files available, then do the following...
- Rename the installation setup.iss to SilentInstall.iss.
- Rename the un-installation setup.iss to SilentUninstall.iss
Then the command line to silently install Origin is
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s -f1"\\A\Origin\SilentInstall.iss" -f2"\\A\Origin\SilentInstall.log"
and the command line to silently uninstall Origin is
"\\A\Origin\Setup.exe" -s -f1"\\A\Origin\SilentUninstall.iss" -f2"\\A\Origin\SilentUninstall.log"
Note: no space after f1, or f2.
Put all paths in double quotes. Windows may remove the double paths to setup.exe if there are spaces
