Custom Application for Ford continued...

The engineer responsible for data analysis then consulted with the software developer to determine whether it would be possible to automatically create this type of graph using Origin's LabTalk scripting language. The software developer explained that this could easily be done - the LabTalk language provides access to virtually every aspect of the program. Because of time constraints, the engineer asked for assistance from an OriginLab (formerly Microcal) consultant to get the script up and running as soon as possible. The consultant worked with the engineer to develop a LabTalk script that prompts the user to select the proper dataset, then automatically generates the entire series of graphs required by the design engineers -- including the new multi-axis graphs -- in a matter of minutes.

The engineer took advantage of the customizability of the program to make some minor adjustments to the graphs that improved their usability and appearance.
With Origin, every aspect of a graph is independently adjustable simply by clicking on it. It is possible to use whatever fonts, orientations, sizes and colors are needed to visually express relationships.
The new Origin graphs have helped Ford engineers substantially improve the process of testing torque converters. The previous tedious process of generating charts has been streamlined to the point that it essentially can be accomplished simply by pushing a button and selecting a dataset. In addition, the multi-axis graphs generated by the new script more clearly delineate data interdependencies and avoid the possibility of misreading charts because the axes are misaligned or out of scale.
