New York City College of Technology Integrates Origin Data Analysis and Graphing Software into its Chemistry Instrumentation Lab Course

Chemistry students learn the importance of analyzing and presenting data to extract more information and maximize understanding

Northampton, Mass. – July 31, 2013 OriginLab, a leading publisher of data analysis and graphing software, today announced that the Department of Chemistry at New York City College of Technology (City Tech), part of The City University of New York, has integrated Origin into its Instrumental Methods of Analysis lab course. The department uses Origin to help students develop data analysis and presentation skills that will benefit them in their future careers. Origin helps students understand the importance of processing the data generated by scientific instruments to gain maximum information and convey that understanding to others.

Dr. Jay Deiner, assistant professor of chemistry at City Tech, has used Origin for several years in his research on materials development and digital fabrication of electrocatalytic devices such as batteries and fuel cells. He also teaches several undergraduate chemistry courses including Instrumental Methods of Analysis. He incorporated Origin into this lab course to teach data analysis concepts and skills.

“One of the most important skills in Instrumental Methods of Analysis is learning how to process the data that comes from scientific instruments, as well as appreciating that you must process data in detail to gain maximum information from it,” says Dr. Deiner. “By using Origin, the students learn how to use a sophisticated data analysis program that they may encounter in future work in both academic research or in industry. It also enables them to extract much more information from the data they generate. Finally, it helps students understand that much of science is thinking and data analysis.”
